Jamaican Educators Discuss Island Education

A contingent of 50 Jamaican educators-including 20 principals-traveled to ASCD's Annual Conference in Orlando to find out about new practices and policies and gather materials to improve their own practice. Last year, about 30 attended the conference in New Orleans. Because they found it so beneficial, the Jamaican Ministry of Education sponsored increased participation this year.

Austin Ezenne from the University of the West Indies presented Sunday morning on "Responding to the Call for Accountability." Participants from San Maarten, Trinidad, Barbados, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and the United States compared their education systems in terms of leadership, discipline, teacher/student ratio, and funding.

I'm sure that there's a lot going on in Jamaica. To keep in touch with like-minded educators, you may want to consider joining our Global Education Network. You could also start either an ASCD connected community or affiliate in Jamaica. There are other ways to get involved with ASCD as well, if anyone from the group is interested. There's also still time to get in a proposal to present at next year's conference.

Glad you liked the conference, good luck with the interview.

I was so excited to read about the Jamaican contingent. My mother is from Jamaica and I still have many relatives in Jamaica, some in education. Maybe next year they can present a session about some of the effective strategies that are working in Jamaica. No problem man?

It would be great to hear from them about education in Jamaica. There's still time for them to get their presenter proposal in for next year, but they shouldn't wait too long; all proposals for the 2006 Annual Conference must be received by May 1, 2005.

You might also want to send them the information about how ASCD networks, connected communities, and affiliates can support them from our previous comment.

If any of them have feedback about or perspectives on the conference, be sure to let them know that they can post them here.

Funny you should mention presentations. The principals were already talking about coming to the conference next year to present some of the findings from the USAID project that sent them to ASCD. Thanks again to everyone for extending a warm welcome to my Jamaican counterparts. If you want to know what is going on in Jamaican schools check the New Horizons for Primary schools project expo next month in person or online.

Apologies for taking so long to get back to you about this. What a great program. I strongly encourage the principals or whoever is interested to submit a proposal to present at next year's conference. All educators will be interested in hearing how they were able to make such successful changes to their school.

Remind them that there are only three weeks left to get their proposal in. The best way is to submit their proposal online. All the information that they need should be there, but if they have questions, they can contact us.

Do you have a URL for the New Horizons expo?

It was great to read about the Jamaican Educators. They like others may be interested in encouraging their teachers and students to engage in an online project connecting students/ educators who live on islands.
Educators in Tasmania, Australia are working through learning sequences that help students of all ages to gain a deeper understanding of issues related to islands.
Webbing the Islands is a 21st century communication project. A website for globally focused islanders young and old, it opens a portal to the world of island adventures and discoveries.
It is a collaboration that brings together students, educators and artists to explore and celebrate what it is to live on an island. It also stimulates lively discussion and exchange about the impact global communication technologies and environmental change are having on island futures.
Explore the website, cruise the links, contribute to the discussion forums, drop us an email. From the academic to the outlandish, enjoy the fruits of the next generation of islanders' efforts to communicate their world and dream up the next.

The url our project site will include expo information shortly (by tommorrow with any luck) so try the NHP website. I think that someone is supposed to be submitting a proposal to present findings from the USAID project that sent the principals to ASCD.

I am extremely happy that this is happening at this time. I now teach in the USA and I am so proud that I got my training in Jamaica. We have a number 1 system and should do every thing to protect it. Please only accept the things in the USA system that will truly help our system. I AM PROUD OF OUR GREAT SYSTEM.
